Ken River


The Ken River flows through two states, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and is one of the major rivers in the Bundelkhand region of central India. It flows into the Yamuna as a tributary.

Its basin is located between 23°20' and 25°20' north latitude and 78°30' and 80°32' east longitude. The river begins near Ahirgawan Village in the Jabalpur District of M.P., at an elevation of 550 metres above mean sea level, and joins the Yamuna River near Chilla Village in Uttar Pradesh, at an elevation of about 95 metres. It is the state boundary between M.P.'s Panna and Chhattarpur districts, as well as the common boundary between M.P.'s Chhattarpur and Banda districts (U.P.). The river is 427 kilometres long, with 292 kilometres in M.P., 84 kilometres in U.P., and 51 kilometres as the common boundary. The Ken River basin has a total catchment area of 28,058 square kilometres, with 24,472 square kilometres in Madhya Pradesh and 3,586 square kilometres in Uttar Pradesh.
 
Sonar, Bearma, Kopra, Bewas, Urmil, Mirhasan, Kutni, Kail, Gurne, Patan, Siameri, Chandrawal, Banne, and other important tributaries of the Ken River include Sonar, Bearma, Kopra, Bewas, Urmil, Mirhasan, Kutni, Kail, Gurne, Patan, Siameri, Chandrawal, Banne, and others. Sonar, the longest tributary, is 227 kilometres long and entirely within M.P. Sonar is also the largest tributary in terms of catchment area, with a catchment area of 12,620 sq km.
 
Between north latitudes of 23°20' and 23°50' and east longitudes of 78°30' and 79°15', the Sonar sub-basin is entirely within Madhya Pradesh. It's a long, leaf-shaped catchment with a width of about 40 kilometres. The Sonar basin is bordered on the east by the Bearma basin (a Ken River sub-basin), on the west by the Dhasan basin (a Betwa River sub-basin), and on the south by the Vindhyan ranges. The major districts in this sub-basin are Sagar and Damoh, with portions of Panna, Chattarpur, and Raisen also included. The Sonar basin has a total catchment area of 6,550 square kilometres. Bewas, Dehar, Kaith, and Baink on the left bank, and Kopra and Bearma on the right bank, are the major tributaries of Sonar.

Tourist attractions include the Raneh Falls on the Ken River and the Ken Gharial Sanctuary. The granite, dolomite, and quartz rocks that formed here provide a spectacular view of various hues. At the confluence of the Ken and Simri rivers, the Gangau Dam was built. Panna National Park is bisected by the Ken River.
