- The Virshaivas is a Shaivite sect in Hinduism that emerged in the 12th Century AD in Karnataka during the reign of Kalachuri dynasty.
- They opposed the elaborate rituals prescribed by Hindu priests.
- They also rejected the caste system and various social practices of Hindus.
- It was initiated by Basavanna and was assisted by Allamaprabhu and Akkamaha Devi.
- They wanted a more egalitarian society and greater individual freedom.
- The followers are called Virshaiva (heroes of Shiva) or the Lingayats (wearers of Shivalinga).
